Going Carbon Neutral: New Zealand’s first High Speed Electric Ferry

Going Carbon Neutral: New Zealand’s first High Speed Electric Ferry

For over 20 years, East by West Ferries have been running light weight composite ferries on their run across the capital’s harbour.   Fuel efficient operation has always been a focus of their business and this has helped them to minimize running costs.  As the world now turns its attention to reducing C02 emissions in the transport sector, East by West has made the leap to an all carbon fibre, full electric ferry while the rest of the industry still languishes with heavy aluminium vessels and diesel propulsion.

An all New Zealand team of engineers and designers was assembled to deliver this first of a kind vessel.  Tony Stanton, Engineering Manager at composite structural engineering firm Gurit, will present some of the drivers and innovative design solutions that have gone into making this remarkable vessel a commercial reality.
